Luxembourg with a dog: Our experiences & tips for Luxembourg City

Luxembourg City is definitely worth a visit. The impressive architecture, historic buildings, bridges, and different levels of the city make Luxembourg a truly special travel destination. Anyone who enjoys photography and strolling through beautiful European cities will find many wonderful spots here.

But what is it like to visit Luxembourg with a dog ? Our experiences were unfortunately somewhat mixed.

Dogs are welcome almost everywhere

We were pleasantly surprised by how commonplace dogs are in many places in Luxembourg.

We were very welcome. We hardly ever felt unwelcome anywhere with Rocket. That definitely makes a city trip much more relaxed.

Another major advantage is the availability of free access to fresh drinking water along the way . This is incredibly convenient, especially on warm days or during longer walks through the city with a dog. If your water bottle runs out, you can refill it on the go.

We always pack a water bottle for Rocket anyway – but it's still reassuring to know that we can get fresh water on the go.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of broken glass on the streets.

What significantly marred our otherwise pleasant impression was the amount of glass on the

streets and sidewalks .

With a dog, this means constantly looking down. Broken glass can quickly lead to painful injuries to their paws and make a relaxing walk difficult. Especially in an unfamiliar city, you certainly don't want to have to constantly check where your dog is going to step next.

For us, this is an important point in the question of how dog-friendly Luxembourg City actually is.

Very crowded – and little consideration for dogs

Furthermore, Luxembourg City can get very crowded at times. That alone wouldn't be a major problem for a city-savvy dog like Rocket.

We found it more difficult that many people barely paid attention to whether a dog was walking beside or in front of them. On several occasions, we had the feeling that people simply continued walking without keeping their distance or taking any consideration for the fact that there was a small dog right in front of their feet.

This can quickly become dangerous, especially for smaller dogs. Therefore, in busy areas, you should keep a close eye on your dog and, if in doubt, briefly pick him up.

Our conclusion: Luxembourg with a dog?

Luxembourg City is beautiful – but not a destination we would specifically recommend for a holiday with a dog.

The architecture is impressive, dogs are pleasingly often welcome, and the opportunity to get fresh water for free is a real plus.

However, this was contrasted by the large number of people, the sometimes disregard for dogs, and especially the broken glass on the streets. As a result, we couldn't enjoy our walks with Rocket as relaxed as we're used to in other cities.

Anyone planning a trip to Luxembourg with their dog can still have a lovely time here. However, we would advise paying particular attention to their paws, avoiding crowded areas as much as possible, and always keeping an eye on the ground.
